ZAMBOANGA DEL NORTE – In the early hours of Sunday, October 27, a magnitude 4.1 earthquake struck near the town of Siayan, Zamboanga del Norte, sending mild tremors across parts of the Zamboanga Peninsula. The quake occurred at 12:22 a.m., with its epicenter located 17 kilometers south-southwest of Siayan, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
The tremor, though moderate in magnitude, was felt in several nearby areas. The town of Kagawasan, located 43 kilometers southeast of the epicenter, reported experiencing light shaking. With a population of approximately 2,200, Kagawasan residents felt minor vibrations, but no damage was reported.
Farther from the epicenter, Zamboanga del Norte residents, located over 300 kilometers east-southeast, experienced weak shaking as well. While the earthquake was noticeable to some, particularly those awake in the early hours, there were no reports of injuries or structural damage.
Local authorities are monitoring the situation, but Phivolcs has stated that no aftershocks are expected. Residents are encouraged to review basic earthquake safety precautions as a precautionary measure.
